They now have a temporary maid from Cambodia. His grandma and aunt have been having problems with her because she does not speak a word of English and they have been communicating using sign language. Another issue they have with the diminutive girl is that she cannot reach some of the cabinets due to her height (apparently she's really tiny). She also has to be taught several times for the simplest tasks. It's just a matter of time before she is returned to the maid agency.
I told Roland, if it was me, I would probably keep her. Just being being here, it's obvious that she needs the money, for her and probably her family too. She's barely out of her teens, I bet it's not easy for her to leave her family and country to a foreign country where she knows no one, just to earn some money.
It is not her fault that she does not speak English. If everyone keeps rejecting her because she does not speak English, she would never get the chance to learn English! (Reminds me of the time when I first graduated and was told a few times that they could not hire me because I lack experience! I'd never get any experience if no one gives me my first job!).
And her small size is definitely not her fault. She's born that way, and I am sure she has been teased enough in her life for her tiny size. I have to see it from Roland's family's point of view as well. His grandma is wheelchair-bound, and it does take a lot of strength to move her from her wheelchair to the car and vice versa.
After this temporary stint, I do hope that she will find a nice family who will give her a chance.

I like how you see things from both sides. More often than not, it's always the maids that gets the bad rep especially when they cannot meet the demands of their employers.
So it was nice that you put things into perspective :)
In our case, we've yet to experience a happily ever after... 100% of the non-Formosan housekeeping staff my family have employed over the years have - in the end - taken advantage of our goodwill and kindness (usually in the form of increasing laziness, laxity in propriety and the like).
I am speaking as someone who doesn't believe in being waited on. :-( We only employ these people to look after my nearly-90 y.o. Grandmother.
Interestingly, we've NEVER had any problems with our Formosan staff, in contrast.
Of course, they cost 2-5 more and don't like to live-in 24/7. :-/
Work ethics differ a heck of a lot...
Anyway, congrats on your engagement!
That is probably quite true. You have such a good heart to see things from both sides. I wish her the best as well.
